I still&#8230; love&#8230; you&#8230; Hold on.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve mentioned that the path to my advertising career started at a young age, and that seeing Ads I Wish I\u2019d Made played a part in keeping me on that path. It\u2019s a thing that\u2019s still ongoing \u2014 ads that make me want to be a better creative. Many of those ads are big challenges that creatives manage to tackle with great creativity, and I can think of few challenges greater (although I can definitely think of some right now) than making a deadly global pandemic just a little bit less depressing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, let\u2019s be clear: We are by no means out of the woods yet, and we definitely aren\u2019t ready for jokey COVID-19 ads. (Comedy = Tragedy + Time, and y\u2019all, we\u2019ve barely passed the four-month mark., and also, INFECTIONS ARE GOING UP AND NOT DOWN, Y\u2019ALL. THIS IS NOT FUNNY). But the human spirit can\u2019t sit in solemn darkness forever, and I think there are ways to bring in light without making light of the pandemic itself. Not every ad has to start with solemn pianos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Case in point: all of these.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Make Covid Lonely (Donne\/Brown\/Dagg)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Possibly my favorite part of these posts is making my own rules and then breaking them, so I\u2019m going to get this one out right up front: There is piano. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adeevee.com\/2020\/05\/covid19-campaign-makecovidlonely-integrated\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">But this integrated campaign from a number of smart creatives<\/a> gets a pass on the basis that it\u2019s used for comic and not sentimental effect, and also on the basis that I get to say so, so suck it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Make Covid Lonely\" width=\"693\" height=\"390\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dB76s-iqhTk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>My only concern about the ad is that COVID-19 looks so cuddly. I mean, it\u2019s like those <a href=\"https:\/\/muppet.fandom.com\/wiki\/Honkers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Honker muppets<\/a> except with horns all over their head and you just want to hug it and pet it and oh dear, I\u2019ve just made a terrible mistake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Farmers Insurance, \u201cBack-ish\u201d (RPA, USA)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Because I always love a good ad grenade, here are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adsoftheworld.com\/media\/film\/farmers_insurance_backish\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a couple of short ads for Farmers Insurance<\/a> that give me a chuckle. (Only the first two. The third one does get disqualified for piano because, again, I get to.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Crowd Control\" width=\"693\" height=\"390\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Iz9bvfPaALQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cCOVID-19 Brainstorm\u201d (Evan Silver)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I mean\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Covid 19 Brainstorm - Short Film\" width=\"693\" height=\"390\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Mz5tuj7TbOo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bud Light, \u201cStay at Home Humans of Genius\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The first go-round with this campaign was silly and verging on hokey and I just loved it. I mean, give me a funny concept and then go too far with it, and I\u2019m on board. (Yes, I&#8217;m yet to completely tire of Allstate&#8217;s &#8220;Mayhem&#8221; campaign. Don&#8217;t @ me.) So naturally, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adweek.com\/brand-marketing\/bud-light-reimagines-iconic-campaign-in-stay-at-home-humans-of-genius-ads\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this revival of Bud Light&#8217;s &#8220;Real Men of Genius&#8221; campaign<\/a> made it on my list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Air High-Five Inventor: Stay at Home Humans of Genius\" width=\"693\" height=\"390\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0vBA8_Tk2Xc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Honorable mentions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adsoftheworld.com\/media\/content\/nyc_footy_respectthedistance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>NYC Footy, \u201c#RespectTheDistance\u201d<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And I don\u2019t even know anything about\u2026 footy? Whatever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lGOaN0jLFXA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, Jed Foundation, \u201cWhatever Gets You Talking\u201d (Droga5)<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No, for real, suicide prevention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6dimCZCfGMI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hotels.com, \u201cHotels.com: Social Distancing\u201d<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Honestly, I wasn&#8217;t nuts about this campaign when it first came out, and I don&#8217;t know at which point my mind was changed, but this social-distancing ad gives me a chuckle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The takeaway<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The takeaway here is that INFECTIONS ARE GOING UP AND NOT DOWN, Y\u2019ALL, SO STAY THE EFF HOME AND WEAR A MASK IF YOU HAVE TO GO OUT. IT\u2019S NOT FUN, BUT PANDEMICS ALSO ARE NOT FUN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wait, no, the takeaway is that it isn\u2019t a requirement to be dour and dire in all our communications. We just have to be respectful. And if you hit that balance of respectful and funny, you might make it into the next round of Ads I Wish I\u2019d Made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, please wear a mask.
