Just disappointed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eonline.com\/news\/1112221\/issa-rae-reacts-to-her-viral-those-men-moment-at-oscars-nominations-announcement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"She later said (opens in a new tab)\">She later said<\/a>, \u201cI just think it\u2019s unfortunate. I think that the Academy needs to be better. I think I\u2019m kind of tired of having the same conversation.\u201d Because of course she is. Because it\u2019s a tiresome conversation that we shouldn\u2019t have to have anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We can\u2019t just avoid it, because pretending it isn\u2019t happening won\u2019t make it go away. (Got it? <em>Just not talking about it won\u2019t make it stop happening.<\/em>) But we can highlight some of the moments that aren\u2019t just a celebration of white dudes\u2019 achievement in the field of motion pictures, so here are some of my favorites from last night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. GiveHerABreak<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Arguably, one of the great moments happened before the Oscar telecast even started, with agency Mojo Supermarket\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adweek.com\/tv-video\/this-oscars-viewer-replaces-commercials-with-trailers-for-films-directed-by-women\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"GiveHerABreak campaign (opens in a new tab)\">GiveHerABreak campaign<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/giveherabreak.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"GiveHerABreak (opens in a new tab)\">GiveHerABreak<\/a> provided an online Oscars portal that replaced commercials with trailers for more than a dozen woman-directed films that got passed over this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-twitter aligncenter wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Just a few of the Best Directors we know. *Cough cough* <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TheAcademy?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@theacademy<\/a>.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/thumbelulu?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@thumbelulu<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/oliviawilde?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@oliviawilde<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/GretaGerwig?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#GretaGerwig<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LoreneScafaria?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@LoreneScafaria<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Almaharel?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@Almaharel<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/melinamatsoukas?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@melinamatsoukas<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/emily_taguchi?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@emily_taguchi<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/MatiDiop?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#MatiDiop<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SamTaylorJ?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@SamTaylorJ<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/AllaKovgan?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#AllaKovgan<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/RachelLears?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#RachelLears<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JillMagid?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@JillMagid<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/annabelllllleee?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@annabelllllleee<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ShelaghMcLeod?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@ShelaghMcLeod<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DEsterhazy?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@DEsterhazy<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/cliFz1eSI6\">pic.twitter.com\/cliFz1eSI6<\/a><\/p>&mdash; GIVE HER A BREAK (@giveherabreak_) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/giveherabreak_\/status\/1225830656053252097?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 7, 2020<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou stole our Oscars. So we stole your ads.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Wearing words<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>On the red carpet, we got another reminder courtesy of Natalie Portman, who wore the names of snubbed female directors embroidered on her dramatic Dior cape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/capertongillett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/natalie-portman-oscars.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-443\" width=\"600\"\/><figcaption><em>(Credit Jeff Kravitz\/FilmMagic)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>And we got a message from <em>For Sama<\/em> filmmaker Waad al-Kateab, whose beautiful pink dress gave voice to voiceless Syrians with the words \u201cwe dared to dream\u201d and \u201cwe don\u2019t regret asking for our dignity\u201d embroidered in Arabic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/capertongillett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/waad-al-kateab-oscars.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-444\" height=\"600\"\/><figcaption><em>(Credit Foto AP\/John Locher)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Janelle Monae<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The ceremony itself began, of course, with Janelle Monae\u2019s stellar opening number, starting with a sweet tribute to Mr. Rogers, followed by a spirited and pointed callout of the Academy\u2019s diversity problem, featuring dancers dressed as characters from movies that got passed over for Oscar nods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VYyGHq_DgAs\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s time to come alive, yeah, the Oscars Sunday Night. It\u2019s time to come alive, because the Oscars is so white.\u201d (Which seems excessive, right? I mean, Leonard DiCaprio looked <em>really<\/em> tan that evening.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. More Janelle Monae<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Because the world can&#8217;t have enough Janelle Monae.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VYyGHq_DgAs?start=245\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTonight, we celebrate all the amazing talent in this room. We celebrate all the women who directed phenomenal films. And I\u2019m so proud to stand here as a black queer artist, telling stories. Happy Black History Month.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. \u201cHair Love\u201d and representation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As the awards were presented, we got to watch<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" \u201cHair Love\u201d win the Oscar for Best Animated Short (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/hair-love-wins-oscar-for-best-animated-short-matthew-cherry-2020-02-09\/\" target=\"_blank\"> \u201cHair Love\u201d win the Oscar for Best Animated Short<\/a>, with teenager DeAndre Arnold in attendance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YlyDdE3mveY\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p>Arnold was suspended from school and told he couldn\u2019t walk in his graduation ceremony unless he cut his dreadlocks, so writer Matthew A. Cherry and the rest of the \u201cHair Love\u201d team invited him as their guest to celebrate their tribute to black hair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. Taika Waititi and all the indigenous kids<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When Taika Waititi won his Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar \u2014 as the first indigenous director ever to do so \u2014 for <em>Jojo Rabbit<\/em>, he dedicated his award to \u201call the indigenous kids in the world who want to do art and dance and write stories.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/47O-8im8Gq4\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are the original storytellers, and we can make it here, as well.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. Cynthia Erivo and \u201cStand Up\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We got to watch this stunning performance of the song \u201cStand Up\u201d from <em>Harriet<\/em>, courtesy of Best Original Song and Best Actress nominee Cynthia Erivo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/x7S1kehYR2M\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p>We can note the fact that only one single actor of color was nominated for a performing Oscar, or we can enjoy her outstanding song and outstanding rendition of said song. Or we can even do both!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8. Utkarsh Ambudkar, Questlove, and a sign of the times<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Actor Utkarsh Ambudkar (with the help of Questlove) serenaded us with a more-or-less freestyle rap recapping the show midway through \u201cfor a bunch of nominees that don\u2019t look like me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/X8ZeY38XowQ\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBeen a long time trying to be colorblind. What you\u2019re seeing right in front of you\u2019s a sign of the times.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">9. Hildur Gudnadottir and her original score<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Last night, we also got to watch Hildur Gudnadottir become the first woman in nearly a quarter of a century to win Best Original Score for the music from <em>Joker<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PO5QhNZe_EA\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p>Arguably the most deserving <em>Joker<\/em> nod of the night YEAH I SAID IT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">10. Bong Joon Ho and Sharon Choi<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At the tail end of the ceremony, Bong Joon-ho took home Best Director honors for <em>Parasite<\/em>, which would go on to become the first-ever foreign-language film to win the Oscar for Best Motion Picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ftz-BPqCiZU\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p>And make note of director Bong\u2019s interpreter, Sharon Choi \u2014 a filmmaker in her own right, with a feature script in the works, whom Bong reportedly brought along both because of her translating skills <em>and<\/em> to give her some visibility, because I don\u2019t know, maybe bringing people with you when you\u2019re on the rise is a good way to&nbsp;use your success to help others succeed, or something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bravo, y\u2019all.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>So congratulations to all of last night\u2019s winners, particularly the ones who provided a little bit of representation for people who often don\u2019t see themselves represented at all, much less honored among the old guard who basically get nominated for these things by default at this point <em>coughJoaquinPhoenixcough<\/em>. Maybe next year, we\u2019ll see two people of color for acting awards, or even three!
