I can say \u201cSuper Bowl\u201d?) you would have paid around $5.6 million for 30 seconds of airtime. (You also probably would have previewed the ad online anyway, which kind of makes me wonder what the point is? I mean, I know there\u2019s a point, and I pretty much know what it is, but I also still kind of wonder what the point is.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Like, \u201cHey, remember how fun it always is to watch the Super Bowl and see what huge, high-concept, big-budget ads all the brands are running? What if we took part of that fun away?\u201d)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyway, there are the ads that run during the Super Bowl, and the ones that run before and during the Super Bowl, and then there are ads that don\u2019t make it to the Big Game at all. Maybe it\u2019s a budget issue. Maybe it\u2019s a content issue. But that doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s a quality issue, and we\u2019re going to highlight the best of them right here, right now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Note: A lot of ads that never made it were rejected by the network for sexual content, and you know what? Whatever. Bo-ring. Anyone can have some hot chicks in bikinis, carrying around melons as a cheap boob metaphor and\/or replacing a man\u2019s caracturistically harridanish wife with someone young and sexy and, one assumes, sexually obedient. It takes real creativity to get banned for creativity \u2014 or to make an ad that gets as much buzz as the rest without having to pay for primetime.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s to five ads that didn\u2019t actually make it into the Su \u2014 shit, the Big Game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pornhub<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut Caperton!\u201d you\u2019re saying. \u201cYou just said you aren\u2019t showing any ads with sex in them!\u201d Hush up, I know what I\u2019m doing. This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/pornhub-super-bowl-commercial-rejected_n_2577912\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"ad for a streaming porn site (opens in a new tab)\">ad for a streaming porn site<\/a> is almost disconcertingly wholesome, but was rejected anyway by the network in 2013 for being\u2026 an ad for a streaming porn site. Two people in separate bathtubs selling boner pills? Acceptable. Put them on the same bench? WHOA, NOW.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Pornhub -\u201c2013 Super Bowl Commercial \u201c\" width=\"693\" height=\"390\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xdcpQBWOeAg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Acreage Holdings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In a completely different direction is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegrowthop.com\/cannabis-news\/cannabis-advertising-super-bowl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"last year\u2019s ad from Acreage Holdings (opens in a new tab)\">last year\u2019s ad from Acreage Holdings<\/a>, showing individuals and families whose lives have been made infinitely better by this one drug. It\u2019s emotional and stirring and occasionally hard to watch. It\u2019s also asking viewers to call their members of Congress in support of legalized medical marijuana, which apparently offends CBS just as much as two elderly people on a park bench does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Acreage Cannabis Ad Rejected For Super Bowl By CBS\" width=\"693\" height=\"390\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/j4GpGHgOHAk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bud Light, \u201cSwear Jar\u201d (DDB Chicago)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Once again, the puritanical network pulls the plug on an ad that doesn\u2019t have an inch of bare skin or a single audible swear word. <a href=\"http:\/\/theinspirationroom.com\/daily\/2008\/bud-light-swear-jar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"This ad, full of office workers just trying to raise money for some Bud Light (opens in a new tab)\">This ad, full of office workers just trying to raise money for some Bud Light<\/a>, might not have been good enough for CBS in 2008, but it\u2019s good enough for me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Bud Light Swear Jar\" width=\"693\" height=\"520\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JI3Y1auTFpU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Old Spice, \u201cThe Man Your Man Could Smell Like\u201d (Wieden+Kennedy)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>THAT\u2019S RIGHT, MFers: <a href=\"https:\/\/adage.com\/article\/special-report-super-bowl\/how-old-spice-won-super-bowl-without-actually-being-it\/2230756\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"This masterpiece of an ad (opens in a new tab)\">This masterpiece of an ad<\/a> didn\u2019t actually run during the Super Bowl. It debuted February 9, 2010, two days <em>after<\/em> Super Bowl XLIV. (Fun fact: The ad was frantically thrown together at the last minute in response to the announcement that Unilever would be running an ad for Dove Men + Care during the game, and I don\u2019t even remember what that one was about, but this one has held up for a decade.) Its enduring awesomeness has even carried up to this past weekend, wherein we learned that The Man has a son. And of course he does. What woman wouldn\u2019t want to make a baby with a man who has two tickets to that thing you love?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Old Spice | The Man Your Man Could Smell Like\" width=\"693\" height=\"390\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/owGykVbfgUE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Newcastle, \u201cIf We Made It\u201d (droga5)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/droga5.com\/work\/if-we-made-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Newcastle\u2019s 2014 non-Super Bowl campaign (opens in a new tab)\">Newcastle\u2019s 2014 non-Super Bowl campaign<\/a> was actually all about the ad they wished they could have made. An entire microsite included teasers, storyboard highlights, and behind-the-scenes videos of the distinct lack of advertisement. I include this video here not because I have a hetero girl crush on Anna Kendrick or anything but because of the iconic celebrity endorsement, \u201cNewcastle Brown Ale \u2014 the only beer that ever promised me a high-paying role in a [bleep] commercial and then backed out at the last [bleep] second like a bunch of [bleep]. Suck it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Anna Kendrick In Super Bowl Commercial - Newcastle Football Commercial\" width=\"693\" height=\"390\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/z4Ec4UaRf90?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Honorable Mention: Skittles, \u201cSkittles Commercial: The Broadway Musical\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2019, Skittles saved its Super Bowl money and opted instead to put on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vulture.com\/2019\/02\/skittles-the-musical-commercial-michael-c-hall-broadway.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"one-night-only musical (opens in a new tab)\">one-night-only musical<\/a> at a famous NYC theater, featuring Michael C. Hall and other Broadway greats performing such anti-consumerism classics as \u201cAdvertising Ruins Everything.\u201d (I mean, tell me he isn\u2019t a little bit right. Let\u2019s not kid ourselves.) In case you weren\u2019t able to get tickets to the show, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"an original cast album (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/1CdBMajQnGPRULvlRirB12\" target=\"_blank\">an original cast album<\/a> is available on Spotify.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ticket proceeds, ftr, were donated to Broadway Cares\/Equity Fights AIDS, so lucky theatergoers even got to do a good deed while seeing Michael C. Hall in a cat costuming dying onstage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Oops. Spoiler.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Have I missed any great non-Super Bowl ads?
