Why shouldn\u2019t they play with language? Why shouldn\u2019t Nutella \u201cSpread the happy\u201d? At the very least, it\u2019s accurate \u2014 I know I\u2019ve always felt happy when I\u2019ve spread Nutella.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And then I was watching TV and was barraged by the same InterContinental Hotel ad instructing me to \u201cGuest how you guest,\u201d and I discovered even I have limits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are, at least, pretty indulgent limits. I offer a lot of wiggle room in acceptable levels of grammar manipuliification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The innocuous: Nouning adjectives<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Not all grammar manipulation is infuriating. Sometimes, you\u2019re just looking for a way to express your brand promise \u2014 like spreading happy \u2014 in an unusual way.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"United Airlines &#039;Good Leads The Way&#039; TVC via 72andSunny\" width=\"693\" height=\"390\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CNteWtlOr3Y?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>United Airlines: <strong>\u201cGood leads the way.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leesa: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.leesa.com\/article\/committed-to-better-in-2022-and-beyond\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cCommitted to better\u201d<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PNC Bank: <strong>\u201cBoring has its rewards.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe it\u2019s a little abstract, maybe it\u2019s just omitting a form of the verb \u201cbe,\u201d maybe it\u2019s a pair of quotation marks away from more or less making sense, but it\u2019s easy to pick up what you\u2019re putting down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The annoying: Advanced adjective nouning<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>And then sometimes, you\u2019re abusing the format. Because y\u2019all, that\u2019s just a word. All you did was pick a word and put it there, and I don\u2019t even know what \u201crich\u201d is but I\u2019m pretty sure I don\u2019t have any to find.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"&quot;Richest Person&quot; || \u201cLet\u2019s find your rich&quot;\u2122 ad campaign | Edward Jones\" width=\"693\" height=\"390\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VY9-h1kQnB4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Edward Jones: <strong>\u201cLet\u2019s find your rich.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Deloitte:<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/HnezxZxqsiU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cTogether makes progress.\u201d<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And <a href=\"https:\/\/howbrandsarebuilt.com\/jaguar-rebrand\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jaguar\u2019s controversial 2024 rebrand<\/a> invited us (in all lowercase) not only to <strong>\u201ccreate exuberant\u201d <\/strong>but also to<strong>\u201clive vivid\u201d<\/strong> and <em>also<\/em> to <strong>\u201cdelete ordinary,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You just picked a word, y\u2019all, and that\u2019s not writing, it\u2019s just wording.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The obnoxious: Verbing nouns<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I realize that in the age of \u201cadulting\u201d and \u201cfriending\u201d and whatnot, the verbing of nouns is so commonplace, it\u2019s practically not worth mentioning. But it has to mean <em>something<\/em>. <em>(You just picked a word, y\u2019all.)<\/em> Because I can figure out from context clues what I\u2019m supposed to be doing when I guest, but I\u2019ll be damned if I can sort out the process of extra-ing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Guest how you guest with more hotels for the way you stay with IHG\" width=\"693\" height=\"390\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_8aVWGrQ19k?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>IHG Hotels: <strong>\u201cGuest how you guest\u201d<\/strong> <em>and<\/em> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ispot.tv\/a\/58tX\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cExtra how you extra.\u201d<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Google: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/tCHYMtccduY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cGoogle, the new way to cloud\u201d<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Geico: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@bigwhit77\/video\/7304428043563470110\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cIt\u2019s easy to Geico,\u201d<\/a><\/strong> <em>and<\/em> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/geico\/videos\/it-feels-good-to-geico\/1389461346242904\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cIt feels good to Geico.\u201d<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That last one gets extra obnoxious points for verbing not just a noun but its own brand \u2014 twice. Get over yourself, Geico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Kill me now: Y\u2019all, I don\u2019t even know<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Pile noun verbification upon adjective nouning, and what do you get? Unforgivable word salad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bud Light: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C_3xGlesGip\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cNo matter how hard you football, it\u2019s easy to Sunday.\u201d<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Oh<\/em>, but you think that\u2019s bad?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hotel Chocolat:<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/HotelChocolat\/videos\/gift-the-birthday-wow\/7682654865136904\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cGift the wow.\u201d<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How. Very. Dare you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Grammar different.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Am I painfully aware that I work in an industry that uses \u201ccreative\u201d as a noun? Yes, I am aware. It has not escaped my awareness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And am I also aware that one of the most iconic ads in the industry is also famous for its grammar manipulation, with Apple\u2019s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/CLIyH2SyxZA\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/CLIyH2SyxZA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cThink Different\u201d<\/a><\/strong> ad? Also yes. In its defense, the tagline functions both as an adjective nounification and as a grammar tweak of the otherwise grammatical \u201cthink differently,\u201d which function in parallel to make a pun, and puns are acceptable, because I said so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, is this whole thing completely subjective on my part? Arguably, yes. I don\u2019t universally disapprove of playing around with language \u2014 I celebrate it, in fact. Just don\u2019t take advantage of it, is all. It loses impact (dare I say \u201cbecomes less impactful\u201d?) when you just throw it around until you find yourself gifting wow. But it\u2019s a good tool to have in your creative toolbox. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/calvinandhobbes\/comments\/9gyleq\/verbing_verbed_noun_the_act_of_taking_a_noun_or\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Verbing weirds language<\/a>, and that\u2019s not necessarily a bad thing.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Y\u2019all, it\u2019s all in fun. &lt;3 to all the creative (adjective) teams that worked hard on this creative (noun), except maybe the Hotel Chocolat one.
