Chris, have you hamburgered before? Or is the quality of your own burger that much of a turnoff?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regardless, the outcome was a series of responses from assorted fast food executives, and they didn\u2019t just come for their competitors \u2014 they came for them <em>quick<\/em>. Numerous someones watched that video and their vision went all computery like <em>Terminator<\/em>. I\u2019m the kind of petty person who loves a touch of brand-on-brand violence, when it\u2019s done well. So here are three other occasions when it has, in fact, been done well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wyze isn\u2019t going to try to surveil your neighbors.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the lowlights of the <a href=\"https:\/\/capertongillett.com\/blog\/the-2026-creepy-awards-take-a-dark-turn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2026 Superb Owl\u2019s unintentionally creepy ad offerings<\/a> was Ring\u2019s ad that was supposed to celebrate its Search Party feature, locating a lost dog through the wonders of unwitting neighborhood surveillance. Ring was, at the time, partnered with Flock, a company that shares data with law enforcement agencies, turning their Search Party into more of a Sheriff\u2019s Posse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ring was pretty quick to end the partnership, but the (well-earned) reputational damage had been done, and Wyze came back just three days later with their own brutal ad parody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Definitely Only for Dogs: Ring&#039;s Superbowl Commercial (Parody)\" width=\"693\" height=\"390\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ROFblZ_-9q4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Samsung doesn\u2019t want to destroy your tools of creativity.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Apple got a lot of heat when it released (and then quickly unreleased) an <a href=\"https:\/\/capertongillett.com\/blog\/egad-bad-ad-the-apple-ipad-pro-ad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ad for its new, improved iPad Pro<\/a>. What they <em>wanted<\/em> to do was illustrate how all the tools of creativity \u2014 for art, for music, for gaming \u2014 have been incorporated into this new version of their thinner-than-ever device. What they <em>actually<\/em> did was <a href=\"https:\/\/adage.com\/video\/crush-ipad-pro-apple\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">crush those tools into nothingness<\/a> in a disturbing shower of piano splinters and a <em>Shining<\/em>-eque gush of paint, replacing it with the new digital device that will do it all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that\u2019s why Samsung was quickly on the ball, picking through the rubble for a quiet clapback barely a week later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We would never crush creativity. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/UnCrush?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#UnCrush<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/qvlUqbRlnE\">pic.twitter.com\/qvlUqbRlnE<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Samsung Mobile US (@SamsungMobileUS) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SamsungMobileUS\/status\/1790824457365594487?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 15, 2024<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Aviator Gin clowns on the Peloton Wife.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This classic from 2020 is more of a subtle hit, targeting <a href=\"https:\/\/capertongillett.com\/blog\/three-mistakes-peloton-made-that-you-dont-have-to\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Peloton\u2019s bleak-eyed wife dutifully using the exercise bike her husband bought her for Christmas<\/a>. It\u2019s two friends taking said wife out for a drink (of Aviator gin, of course), celebrating\u2026 whatever has caused her to not be subject to her husband\u2019s fitness implications anymore. Using the exact same actress is what elevates it above a minor gag, which is no less than you might expect from Ryan Reynolds and his Maximum Effort creative agency.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Aviation Gin - The Gift That Doesn&#039;t Give Back\" width=\"693\" height=\"390\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ayD-4nMnB44?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>(How pissed was Peloton about the snark? Not enough that they didn\u2019t come to him for <a href=\"https:\/\/capertongillett.com\/blog\/how-to-make-ads-on-the-fly-like-ryan-reynolds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">another quick-response ad<\/a> after Big got Pelotonned to death on <em>And Just Like That\u2026 <\/em>Dude moves quick.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">They woke up and chose violence,<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>and I\u2019m here for it. I am, myself, a salty bitch. But I\u2019m salty in the manner of a French fry dipped in a chocolate Frosty, meaning I\u2019m also cool and sweet and delicious. So I appreciate brand snarkbacks that are also salty, cool, sweet, and extremely delicious, and I appreciate creatives who see every questionable brand move as not just a cautionary tale but an opportunity.
