And the answer is usually \u201cessentially not at all close.\u201d Which is why egregious product placement is one of my favorite genres of bad advertising, and why so many options are available that Part 1 of this post is dedicated to <em>only the ones for cars<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In no particular order:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Chloe\u2019s Yaris that won\u2019t make it to the North Pole (<em>Smallville)<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course I have to kick things off with the founder of the feast, the offense that inspired this whole post. In Seasons 6 and 7 of the WB\u2019s <em>Smallville<\/em>, Chloe acquires a Toyota Yaris that makes frequent appearances, always referred to as \u201cmy Yaris.\u201d And while the constant references to \u201cmy Yaris\u201d are a hoot, the real prize has to go to her oh-so-natural warning that, awesome gas mileage notwithstanding, her Yaris isn\u2019t going to get them north of the Arctic Circle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Big winner:<\/strong><em> Look, Clark, my Yaris gets awesome mileage, but I seriously doubt it will get us all the way to the North Pole.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">John&#8217;s Tundra that can carry a ton of building materials (<em>The Rookie<\/em>)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe Toyota learned its lesson about awkward dialogue, because when they placed their Tundra on ABC\u2019s <em>The Rookie<\/em> in 2020, they decided to just include a whole-ass commercial instead. We get to watch rookie John Nolan load building supplies into his truck amid gratuitous beauty shots from all angles of a flawless, glossy black pickup, and if you were wondering if the Tundra has a Tow Haul button? Wonder no more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Big winner:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Rookie - Toyota Tundra - not so subtle product placement\" width=\"693\" height=\"390\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WKP0xAdxTj4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jess\u2019s platforms that are difficult to wear around a Fusion (<em>New Girl<\/em>)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to talk in-episode commercial, though, the \u201chold my beer\u201d of the genre is the 2012 episode of Fox\u2019s <em>New Girl<\/em> that was literally a 90-second commercial for the Ford Fusion with Jess stumbling around the car endearingly in platform heels. That is literally it. (And that is the <em>only<\/em> thing that could knock, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=b5-Ru2Jpq74\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cExcuse me, we\u2019re in a Ford Fusion, the best car ever made?\u201d \u201cIt gets double the gas mileage\u2026\u201d<\/a> out of the top spot.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Big winner: <\/strong><em>The all-new Fusion has been totally redesigned inside and out. All new styling [etc., etc., etc.]<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"New girl vs. Ford Fusion\" width=\"693\" height=\"390\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pLNCi2zFzNM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Brennan\u2019s Prius that has intelligent parking assist (<em>Bones<\/em>)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If it seems like I keep going back to the Toyota well, it\u2019s because the brand has never met a show it didn\u2019t want to shoehorn its product into. Starting circa 2009, Toyota set its sights on Fox\u2019s <em>Bones<\/em>, chucking a Matrix at Angela and a Prius at titular character Temperance Brennan. In one Season 6 episode, Brennan takes a few minutes out of a murder investigation to show off her Prius\u2019s self-parking capabilities. Does the car solve murders? Ha ha, Booth, you old joker. (Points for a valiant attempt to stick the landing, at least.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Big winner:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Sweets: Whoa! Ghost driver!<\/em><br><em>Booth: How&#8217;d you do that?<\/em><br><em>Brennan: It&#8217;s called &#8220;intelligent parking assist.&#8221; The car guides itself into the parking spot.<\/em><br><em>Sweets: Wow! Look at that, huh?<\/em><br><em>Booth: Does it solve murders?<\/em><br><em>Brennan: Of course not.<\/em><br><em>Booth: Good. I like my job.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Toyota in Bones\" width=\"693\" height=\"390\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/oDe9_c8QAM0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jesse\u2019s Genesis that\u2019s great for getaways (<em>Burn Notice<\/em>)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2010, Hyundai took over Season 4 of USA\u2019s <em>Burn Notice<\/em>, to super-duper-normal-sounding effect. It\u2019s hard to pick a best-worst line, particularly when IRA alum Fiona Glenanne is quipping that \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/dalebuss\/2013\/08\/02\/hyundai-hates-to-see-burn-notice-fade-into-miami-sunset\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mario Andretti never had a car like [her Hyundai Genesis Coupe]<\/a>.\u201d (Technically true, I guess.) But where does that rank next to burned spy Michael Westen\u2019s spontaneous monologue about what makes the Genesis a good getaway car?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Big winner: <\/strong><em>Making a getaway is often more about precise handling than raw horsepower, so in a hostage situation, rear-wheel drive is a nice advantage. That said, it doesn\u2019t hurt to have more than 300 horsepower at your fingertips.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Horrifying Product Placement in Burn Notice\" width=\"693\" height=\"390\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/A4xlSN9_XT0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Berrigan\u2019s Ford that has traffic assist (<em>White Collar<\/em>)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This entry is kind of a bummer because I can\u2019t remember the exact circumstances or dialogue or <em>anything<\/em>, to the point that I shouldn\u2019t even bother mentioning it but I <em>have to<\/em>. Because amid the show\u2019s extensive Season 2 product placement, the kind where characters get into a Ford and are suddenly, like, \u201cOh, I remember I have to make a phone call, it\u2019s a good thing this Ford has hands-free Bluetooth calling standard on every model,\u201d is a car chase scene with Diana Berrigan and Neal Caffrey and she makes an explicit point of enabling traffic assist, because if you\u2019re going to be screeching perilously through traffic at least you\u2019ll get a beep-beep-beep when you start to wander out of your lane. The fact that I can\u2019t find video, or even a transcript, of this scene will haunt me for as much as a day and a half.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Big winner<\/strong>: Sadly, I got nothin\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Olivia\u2019s Leaf that has plenty of range (and Bluetooth) (<em>Fringe<\/em>)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Nissan became a big fan of Fox\u2019s <em>Fringe<\/em> in 2012. The Titan made a cameo in one episode, and in another, Agent Olivia Dunham for some reason took a break from her usual government-agent-y black SUV to drive a silver Nissan Leaf and, while she\u2019s at it, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo\/?fbid=10150764003057796\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">check the range and answer a hands-free call<\/a>. With plenty of onscreen time to admire the touchscreen with all the charging locations and the handy buttons for making Bluetooth calls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Big winner:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Peter: We\u2019re still about 40 miles out.<\/em><br><em>Olivia: We&#8217;ve still got plenty of range.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hiro\u2019s Nissan Versa that\u2019s a Nissan Versa (<em>Heroes<\/em>)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Olivia\u2019s Leaf is hardly Nissan\u2019s first product placement outing, though. In 2007, the company took NBC\u2019s <em>Heroes<\/em> by storm. Season 2 will always stand out for me for their launch of their then-new crossover Rogue, and how ecstatic indestructible cheerleader Claire gets when her dad buys her one. (Notable quotable: \u201cThe Rogue!\u201d) But if we\u2019re going for egregious, we have to go with Hiro just standing at a car rental counter saying, \u201cNissan Versa!\u201d over and over again. (\u201cThat\u2019s a popular choice,\u201d the clerk tells him.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Big winner:<\/strong> <em>Nissan Versa! Nissan Versa! [\u2026] Nissan Versa!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Hiro Nakamura Nissan Versa Full Scene\" width=\"693\" height=\"390\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pjc-V1l1yk8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">You think that\u2019s bad?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>These are just the tip of the product-placement iceberg. You want to stare pointedly at cell phones while characters make calls, or see a whole suite of electronic devices scattered casually across a tabletop? You want people trying to make \u201cBing\u201d happen? You want lots and lots of delicious sandwiches?
