I was about seven when my cousins came to visit and brought their new, truly huge and bulky camcorder (hey, it was the \u201880s), which we used to shoot a commercial for my pink and purple Huffy bicycle. I\u2019ll admit that my grasp of message strategy was kind of weak at that point, and \u201cPinky: The Bicycle for All Your Needs\u201d isn\u2019t a great tagline, but for someone who\u2019s only recently <em>learned<\/em> to ride a bicycle, I think it was pretty good. (The ad ran during an episode of <em>Lifestyles of the Poor and Insignificant<\/em>, also shot that weekend, which was fantastic placement for the price.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With that kind of a head start, it\u2019s kind of a wonder that I only discovered advertising as an actual career field when my attempt to be a concert pianist fell through. (Ask Me About My Paralyzing Performance Anxiety.) I\u2019ve had decades to amass a pantheon of ads I wish I\u2019d made, either as a casual list in the back of my mind or a spread of tear sheets on a bulletin board for inspiration. Famous commercials, a bourbon ad torn out of an old <em>Wired<\/em> magazine, something one of my coworkers just did \u2014 my only requirement is that I looked at the ad and thought, \u201cThat is so [intense, funny, well-written, clever, moving, etc., etc., etc.]. I wish I\u2019d made that.\u201d They\u2019re ads that make me want to be a better creative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a big collection. Here are just a few highlights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">EDS, Cat Herders (Fallon)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"EDS - Cat Herders - HQ\" width=\"693\" height=\"520\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vTwJzTsb2QQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Everything about this ad is flawless. When this ran during the Super Bowl in 2000, I didn\u2019t know what EDS did (and if I\u2019m being honest, I still don\u2019t entirely), but I immediately fell in love with the metaphor, and the writing, and the music, and the dude lint-rolling the cat hair from his sling next to the campfire, and the absolutely everything else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Old Spice, The Man Your Man Could Smell Like (Wieden + Kennedy)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Old Spice | The Man Your Man Could Smell Like\" width=\"693\" height=\"390\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/owGykVbfgUE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Okay, yes, I realize this one is fairly low-hanging, as fruit goes \u2014 it doesn\u2019t take a creative genius or advertising prodigy to think, \u201cWow, that\u2019s a fun ad! I would like to make fun ads like that.\u201d But there\u2019s so much to it. One of the biggest things is that it was such a departure from Old Spice\u2019s previous branding. It had been solidly in the category of Things in Your Dad\u2019s Medicine Cabinet, and then suddenly here\u2019s Isaiah Mustafa shirtless and abruptly on horseback, appealing to an entirely different market segment and using a kind of self-aware humor that okay the more I dissect it, the less funny it gets, so I\u2019m stopping now. To me, this ad represents a triumph both of creativity and of client service, because behind every concept like this is an AE going to the client and saying, \u201cOkay, I know this sounds crazy, but hear me out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Honda, Safety for Everyone (RPA)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Safety for Everyone \u2013 Honda\" width=\"693\" height=\"390\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tsM6XoqWRFs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the newest addition to the collection. The emotional rollercoaster \u2014 <em>aww<\/em>, and then <em>oh my God<\/em>, and then <em>OH<\/em> \u2014 is intense, and I found myself tearing up for the loved ones of a man who didn\u2019t actually die and never actually existed anyway because he\u2019s a character in a commercial. It\u2019s storytelling dialed up to 11, and&nbsp;I&#8217;m so here for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These are, of course, just a tiny selection from a massive trove of beloved ads that make me want to up my game.
