And I Wish I\u2019d Made it because I would have loved to have been part of the production of a smart, powerful, meaningful ad that supports a cause that\u2019s important to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CoorDown is an organization dedicated to \u201crais[ing] awareness of the potential of people with Down syndrome\u201d \u2014 true inclusion in all areas of life, respecting them and giving them agency in decision-making \u2014 and taking action through advocacy. The campaign was produced in partnership with a number of other advocacy organizations, including the National Down Syndrome Society, who said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cPeople with disabilities deserve a seat at the table where decisions are made about their lives, their futures, and their rights. Let\u2019s work together toward a world where every voice is valued.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s so right, and it\u2019s expressed so effectively in this ad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Big disclaimer:<\/em><\/strong><em> I am an individual with an invisible disability, but I wouldn\u2019t be so presumptuous as to speak for the disability community as a whole. I can just speak for me and my own opinions.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"NO DECISION WITHOUT US | World Down Syndrome Day 2025\" width=\"693\" height=\"390\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xRIQ80rJKAc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>(And <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/u\/0\/d\/e\/2PACX-1vS99y0eW6waV5-SxR52Jitobvv8IPXNu5rJCZ6ygsGhXQIGyfYVZCgECGJePPpdtMZELRE96XvIwBha\/pub?pli=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here\u2019s a link to the descriptive transcript<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why I love it<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I love it for a lot of reasons, of course, but two big ones stood out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. It includes actual disabled people, and in a position of agency.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The ad industry has been getting progressively better about attitudes toward disability \u2014 it\u2019s gone from not including disabled people at all, to including disabled people as sob stories, to disability pr0n, to \u201cif So-and-So can do it, what\u2019s your excuse?\u201d (I said it was progress. I didn&#8217;t say they&#8217;re there yet.) This ad includes disabled people not as objects but as subjects, speaking for themselves instead of just being something to be looked at.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, there\u2019s a good reason that focus was so strong: The organization behind the video is literally an organization that advocates for people with Down syndrome being treated as subjects, speaking for themselves and having agency. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8qLCjgfJboI&amp;ab_channel=CoorDown\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Their video for World Down Syndrome Day 2024<\/a> addressed the assumptions that create limits on the lives of disabled people, and the power of just <em>assuming they can<\/em>. With the ad industry <a href=\"https:\/\/www.creativebrief.com\/bite\/voices\/i-now-understand-connection-between-and-power-disability-and-creativity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">still lagging behind<\/a> in areas of representation <em>in<\/em> ads and involvement at the table <em>making<\/em> ads, they need to look to this one as a guidepost moving forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Credit to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smalltheagency.com\/coordown-assume-that-i-can\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SMALL<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dandad.org\/awards\/professional\/2024\/238406\/assume-that-i-can\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Indiana Production<\/a> for making both of these videos happen.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. The messaging is straightforward and strong.<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/capertongillett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/where-decisions-are-made.jpg\" alt=\"A young woman with Down syndrome stands in a doorway, hand on hip. She\u2019s wearing a purple tutu, a black top, a black biker jacket, a black choker necklace, a high ponytail with a black flower in it, and a glare of defiance at her parents who are picking out her clothes like she\u2019s incapable of choosing for herself.\" class=\"wp-image-3402\" style=\"width:auto;height:400px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/capertongillett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/where-decisions-are-made.jpg 640w, https:\/\/capertongillett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/where-decisions-are-made-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/capertongillett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/where-decisions-are-made-192x240.jpg 192w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Fire.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>During discussions of disabled people\u2019s agency and self-advocacy, one commonly used phrase is \u201cNothing About Us Without Us.\u201d And I do love that, in part because it\u2019s catchy and it rhymes, and you know I love that stuff, and because it gets the point across in an effective way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But \u201cNo Decision Without Us,\u201d and the insistent <em>I want to be where the decisions are made<\/em>, is straightforward and powerful. It takes \u201cNothing About Us Without Us\u201d and turns it into an action item \u2014 <em>\u201cNot Without Us\u201d means including us where it counts.<\/em> Not just consulting disabled people and getting their opinion on whatever you\u2019re doing \u2014 bringing them into the room with as much respect and consideration as you\u2019d extend to anyone else in the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To be clear: I still love \u201cNothing About Us Without Us,\u201d still think it\u2019s great, and don\u2019t want to see it go anywhere. I love cleverness and rhyme. But some messages are big enough that you have to just come out and <em>say it<\/em>, and all the elements of this ad <em>say it<\/em> in a way that can\u2019t be misunderstood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The concepting, messaging, casting, directing, videography, music, performances, all of it come together in an ad that slams through the doors and demands the attention and respect it\u2019s owed, and it\u2019s awesome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Please jump in if you have comments<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>So that\u2019s why it\u2019s an Ad I Wish I\u2019d Made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, now, and first of all: Both of those dresses were hideous, and the girl\u2019s outfit at the end was fire, I will hear no argument on the matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moving on: For all that it was great, the ad wasn\u2019t perfect, and I don\u2019t want this post to be a praisefest where none of its flaws can be discussed. And I don\u2019t want it to be a personal soapbox as you stand around listening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I always welcome comments, but I particularly encourage them in this case \u2014 if you\u2019re also a part of the disability community, <em>or<\/em> if you have a disability and <em>don\u2019t<\/em> consider yourself part of the community, I\u2019d love to hear your feelings on the whole thing.
