And sometimes it doesn\u2019t. Sometimes, the relationship really is supportive and enriching*.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When such a relationship really is supportive and enriching, it\u2019s usually because both parties have tacitly agreed to stow their egos, find happiness in each other\u2019s success, and embrace the good and work around the bad. But hey, sometimes, \u201ctacit\u201d doesn\u2019t need to stay tacit, and it helps to just come out and say it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To solemnly swear it, even.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thus:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Creative Team\u2019s Solemn Vows<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Since it is your intention to work together as part of a creative team at an ad agency, in-house creative department, or similar establishment, place your right hand on this Pantone chip book and declare your consent before God and David Ogilvy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Will you, Creative Director, accept that a creative should be able to defend their work \u2014 and that, in fact, being <em>able<\/em> to defend their work is actually a good thing \u2014 without being labeled \u201cdefensive\u201d?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>I will.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Will you, Creative, accept that there <em>is<\/em> a difference between defending your work and being defensive, and always do your best to keep your ego out of it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>I will.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Will you, Creative Director, promise to always give high-quality feedback, even if doing so takes a little extra time and effort?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>I will.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Will you, Creative, agree to take that feedback gracefully, and accept that you\u2019re (probably) dealing with someone more experienced than you and they might actually be right in a way you don\u2019t understand yet?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>I will.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Will you, Creative Director, accept that people other than you can have great ideas, and your creatives\u2019 (probable) relative lack of experience doesn\u2019t mean you can\u2019t learn something from them?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>I will.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/capertongillett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/vows.jpg\" alt=\"A waist-up shot of a bride and groom, with a minister in the background in a black robe, gold sash, and gold cross, hands raised in blessing. What the mundanities of the ad industry have joined, let no man put asunder unless a better offer comes along, because loyalty and relationships are important but there\u2019s no need to be stupid about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anything I\u2019ve missed? I don\u2019t want to leave anything out of a pledge that is so very, very solemn and binding. I like to think that even in this modern age, a promise on a Pantone chip book still means something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>*And if you think you know who I\u2019m talking about, you\u2019re probably right.
