It\u2019s hardly mark-your-calendars fun, really, but it\u2019s fun to have the freedom to think up non-campaign-related, mildly off-brand high jinks and see them actually brought to life. And it\u2019s relatively low pressure \u2014 if a prank doesn\u2019t land, no one\u2019s going to really care, and if it lands big, it can get a lot of attention for the brand. (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrum.com\/news\/2021\/03\/31\/volkswagen-forced-u-turn-voltswagen-april-fool-s-rebrand-after-duping-media\" target=\"_blank\">This is not to say it\u2019s impossible to pull a complete boner, VOLKSWAGEN<\/a>. Maybe tell your leaky PR team to get its ish together.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some April Fools\u2019 jokes, though, are a disappointment \u2014 not because they weren\u2019t creative, but because I WANT THEM and they should be a real thing but they\u2019re not. They\u2019re a joke. A prank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just because you meant well, that doesn\u2019t mean it wasn\u2019t hurtful, y\u2019all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyway, here are five April Fools\u2019 Day pranks that broke my heart in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lego SmartBricks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If, of course, it were real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Never step on a LEGO brick again! SmartBricks, coming soon&#8230; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/enRuvdGYjP\">pic.twitter.com\/enRuvdGYjP<\/a><\/p>&mdash; LEGO (@LEGO_Group) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LEGO_Group\/status\/1377516169813499909?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 1, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Razer Rapunzel hair dye<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m an inveterate hair colorer, particularly with colors not found in nature, and the only reason I\u2019ve never tried blue is that it fades into green, and I\u2019m just not up for the maintenance required to prevent that. (Also, I\u2019m a \u201csoft summer,\u201d and it\u2019s hard to find the right shade of blue hair dye to match my coloring.) I would kill for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.razer.com\/rapunzel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">nanotech hair color I could control with an app<\/a>. Why are you playing with me like this, Razer?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Razer Rapunzel | Glow Up\" width=\"693\" height=\"390\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Wav_1mqY5ZU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">TaskRabbit TaskRabbits<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You might ask, \u201cCaperton, as a freelancer, how do you feel about TaskRabbit?\u201d As a freelancer, I might reply, \u201cNone of your business, but from what I can tell, there aren\u2019t enough bunnies.\u201d Well, TaskRabbit appears to have taken care of that for me. Or at least they CLAIMED TO HAVE DONE, JUST FOR ONE DAY, and then ripped it all away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"TaskRABBITS\" width=\"693\" height=\"390\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BQv00q0Reqc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>BUNNEH.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While TaskRabbit was, ultimately, lying like a rat bastard about the bunny thing, they have pledged to donate up to $40,000 to rabbit rescues, so something good is coming of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Bearaby Hogger<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While dropping three figures on a weighted blanket is a bit out of my price range, the actual product looks wondrously cuddly. What is less cuddly? Honestly, hedgehogs, which are adorable, and you <em>want<\/em> to cuddle them, but ouch. (They\u2019re kind of shifty in that respect, if you think about it.) Bearaby\u2019s solution to that \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/bearaby.com\/pages\/hogger\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a teeny weighted blanket sized just for comforting hedgehogs<\/a> \u2014 is a perfect one. Or would be, <em>if it actually existed<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In our household, \u201cI hope you step on Legos\u201d is one of the worst curses that can be conferred. Lego\u2019s newly announced innovation takes care of that with torture blocks that escape your foot before you can make painful contact. (Bearaby)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wheyhey new flavors<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019d never even heard of Wheyhey ice cream \u2014 it isn\u2019t available in the U.S. \u2014 so this was a double whammy: I discovered something new (if inaccessible), <em>and<\/em> I discovered it\u2019s a lie. \u201cHa ha ha, banana bread ice cream, amiright?\u201d Banana bread ice cream sounds freaking delicious, Wheyhey, and if it was actually available, I\u2019d\u2026 I don\u2019t know, do something, and you\u2019ve just lost yourself a (non-)customer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Wheyhey want to celebrate the iconic bakes of 2021 by testing some new flavours. And I\u2019m not! Legally, I\u2019m not allowed to lie. <em>Except<\/em> every year on April 1. Every April 1, we\u2019re allowed to lie our butts off, and the best liars are rewarded by going viral. Services you don\u2019t offer? Promises you don\u2019t intend to keep? Table stakes. Impress me, brands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just don\u2019t leave me sad at the end because li\u2019l hedgehogs are left in the cold and I don\u2019t get to eat banana bread ice cream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Have you had your heart broken by a brand\u2019s April Fools\u2019 Day prank? I want you to know I\u2019m here for you.
